My childhood French village: Pélussin

I am so excited today! Not only am I in France but I am back in the little village where I grew up: Pélussin in the département Loire, near Vienne et Lyon. I’m going to share its medieval past with you on video before I do so for real during the Lyon & Surrounding trips I organize and guide.

If you want to come, click here.

If you’re not sure yet, let me give you a mini virtual trip now!

Vous êtes prêt?

Even though I was born in Vienne and spent all my teenage years there, it is in Pélussin that I was a little girl. It’s funny because I didn’t like it as a little girl, all I wanted was sparkling exciting city life, but now that I’m older I am so charmed by the whole bucolic life!

Let me tell you why!

Here is the Château de Virieu with its cute little pond. Built in the 12th century, it had an important military and defensive role until it lost its prestige and started being used as a school and then a hospital.

Here is the Vieille Halle, old covered market place, built in the XVI century for the silk industry. The wet tangled skeins of silk drained itself here thanks to the inclined ground and gravity.

This viaduc built during WW1, which used to link by train Pélussin and its neighbor village called Maclas. Today the train is no more so it’s a perfect place for a walk with a fantastic panorama on the Alpes and the Vallée du Rhône.

And there are so many other cute little places in this little village of 3500 inhabitants! I even got to go back to my primary school Saint Charles and my middle school Saint Jean it was so emotional! I walked in, asked if that was ok, and then spent ages re-exploring every room it was amazing! Then we met an adorable pit bull who attacked us with kisses I was so happy it was just like being with my dog Sophie back at home in Seattle. And of course I fell in love with about 52 houses ha ha!

I hope so 🙂
