Intermediate group : vive la philo!
Last time, we reintroduced la philosophie to our French Book Clubs avec la Grèce classique de Socrate et Platon. For this next round we will remain in Greece, only this time we shall explore the world of Aristotle, or as we say en Français : Aristote! Saviez-vous par exemple que la science qu’il inventa in the 5th century BC, dominera les intellectuels européens jusqu’au 17e siècle? Saviez-vous qu’il est à l’origine de la philosophie politique? de la logique? de l’organisation de la science en différentes catégories? And so much more we will discover together! All these things we take for granted without thinking about it! In fact, the great Dante described him in 1304 as “the master of those who know”!
And please don’t feel intimidated : as always I will make it accessible and fun yet profound, and we will get to discuss, exchange, reflect, learn, ainsi nous passerons un moment très enrichissant!
Here are the books (you won’t need to buy them, I will send you PDF versions) I chose for the intermediate group : Philocomix 2 + Bescherelle L’histoire de la philosophie both written by a selection of philosophy professors whose goal is to make their field accessible to anyone. Youpi!
Nous travaillerons avec ces deux livres à la fois intéressants et amusants. I will also add in a few original texts to illustrate what we are learning.
So much of our Western civilization rests on Greek philosophy, which is why it is so fascinating to explore it!
Beginner group
Here’s the book I chose for the beginner group : Kamo, L’idée du siècle by Daniel Pennac.
If Daniel Pennac’s face looks familiar, it may be because we covered another one of his books, in fact another book from his super funny Kamo collection! And the group and I enjoyed it so much we are continuing! But don’t worry you do not need to have read the first one to enjoy this new one, the order doesn’t matter at all! Pennac is a much loved French writer who won three prestigious literary prizes. He normally writes novels for adults but started at the end of the 20th century to write a series of books for children which tells the story of Kamo, a young brilliant and unusual boy brought up by his mother. It’s funny, light and profound at the same time, and it will teach you lots of cool French slang! The book Kamo, l’agence Babel was written for children aged 10+ so it remains easy to understand while giving you just the right amount of challenge.

A series of 4 classes
Spread out over 4 weeks
Each class will last 1.5 hours
I will divide our book into 4 parts, each part corresponding to 1 class.
You won’t need to buy the book, I will send you a PDF version so we are all on the same page… literally!

Her book club format is a fun way to learn new vocabulary, discuss grammar points and express ideas with a small group of students. In the beginning level, we have read several fairy tales and The Little Prince. Mistakes are simply learning opportunities and questions are always welcome. Virginie is not intimidating and understands the struggles encountered when learning a new language. She helps us with proper pronunciation and offers helpful pointers throughout the class. How much I love my French book club for beginners! I have never been one to enjoy sitting down to a grammar book (even a French one), yet through the charming childrens’ stories we are reading I am learning French grammar, vocabulary, and even spelling. We are halfway though our study of The Little Prince, and I so enjoy answering the homework questions Virginie gives us and I totally look forward to Thursday mornings when I get to gather with her (who doesn’t love spending time with Virginie?!!), and the group– we are now all friends in the quest for French. Well, where to start! It was a huge challenge to participate in the Intermediate Book Club. In fact, it was a first for me.The text by Amelie Nothomb, was immensely interesting on all levels: poetic, historical, philosophical and just plain funny! Virginie is a teacher with a lot of enthusiasm and energy who made me feel welcomed and included and I really enjoyed learning with the other participants who were generous and supportive. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their confidence in speaking French. It was lots of work thought so be sure to check your level and be prepared to give some time to this rewarding activity.
